Coppercoat Application for Boats:

Durable, Eco-Friendly Antifouling Protection

Why Choose Coppercoat Antifouling?

Coppercoat is a high-performance, copper-based epoxy antifouling system that offers long-term protection against marine growth. Unlike traditional antifouling paints, Coppercoat provides a hard, non-eroding surface that remains effective for up to 10 years or more, reducing maintenance costs and environmental impact.

Key Benefits:

  • Extended Lifespan: One application can last a decade or longer, minimizing the need for frequent reapplication.
  • Eco-Friendly: Classified as non-leaching and VOC-free, Coppercoat is safer for marine ecosystems compared to conventional antifouling paints.
  • Enhanced Performance: The hard, smooth finish reduces drag, improving fuel efficiency and speed.
  • Versatile Application: Suitable for GRP, steel, aluminum, and wooden hulls with appropriate primers.

Professional Coppercoat Application Process

Applying Coppercoat requires meticulous preparation and adherence to specific environmental conditions to ensure optimal performance.

1. Surface Preparation

  • Cleaning: Remove all contaminants, including old antifouling paint, grease, and dirt.
  • Sanding: Abrasively sand the hull to create a suitable surface for adhesion.
  • Priming: For metal or wooden hulls, apply an appropriate epoxy primer to prevent corrosion and ensure compatibility.

2. Mixing and Application

  • Mixing: Combine the epoxy resin, hardener, and ultra-fine copper powder as per manufacturer instructions.
  • Application: Apply 4-5 coats using a short-nap roller, ensuring each layer is applied while the previous is still tacky.
  • Environmental Conditions: Apply in temperatures above 8°C with low humidity and no rain forecast for at least 48 hours.

3. Curing and Burnishing

  • Curing: Allow the coating to cure for 5-7 days, depending on ambient conditions.
  • Burnishing: Lightly sand the cured surface with fine-grit sandpaper (400-600 grit) to expose the copper particles, activating the antifouling properties.

Maintenance and Longevity

Coppercoat’s durability means less frequent maintenance. Typically, a simple annual washdown is sufficient to keep the hull clean. Its non-eroding nature ensures consistent performance over time, making it a cost-effective solution for long-term antifouling protection.
